Andrea Palladio, a 16th century Italian architect, creator of the Palladian window, and a proponent of honest classical architecture, was the inspiration behind the Palladian Series. A perfect meeting of form and function, it captures a sense of motion and artistry with its arc reminiscent of an ocean wave. The Shaws™ Shaker sink celebrates a contemporary take on the traditional apron front, farmhouse form with the introduction of the Shaker Single Bowl Apron Front Fireclay Kitchen Sink.

The Deco Series takes its inspiration from one of the most appealing and influential artistic time periods of the past century.

Formafantasma also debuted a new series of utilitarian but delicate lights for Flos made from LED strips enclosed in thick glass panels. Symmetry and asymmetry come together in the Riobel Lateral™ Collection by House of Rohl to create a fresh, warmly minimalist balance. The design decision to offset the lever and place it on the edge transforms proportion and perspective, which is further complemented by other design elements such as the rounded arc of the spout and high base. Perrin & Rowe’s® world renowned brassware and sanitary ware are crafted in England from start to finish. With flawless functionality and conscientious aesthetics, Perrin & Rowe® products are not mass produced; instead, skilled artisans hand craft each piece using the perfect combination of age old processes and the latest technologies.

This quest is fueled by a passion to honor the principles of distinctive design. The result is a superior experience, where refined aesthetics serve a purpose and make a distinctive, modern statement. The modern design concept is one of balance, minimalism, and is linear. And yet, architectural and geometric elements are often present in this style, and while the aesthetics are minimal and uncluttered, modern style is the epitome of sophistication and elegance. The aesthetic was institutional furniture meets Italian grandma’s house.

Flourishes of curves and contours enhance its elegant, classic design. The straight lines of the handles and rounded detailing echo elements characteristic of Mid-century furniture. Yet, the collection stands apart from its inspiration to create its own rich aesthetic and flow – arresting, rhythmic and refined. During the past two years, the acquisitions of Riobel, Perrin & Rowe, Shaws, ROHL and Victoria + Albert by Fortune Brands Global Plumbing Group has established a luxury collection of faucets, fixtures, fittings and accessories for the organization. Positioned to offer a full range of styles, from modern to traditional, the House of Rohl offers an assortment of specially crafted products – each with its own story of family heritage, place of origin and specialized manufacturing philosophy.

For more information, homeowners and designers can discover the latest luxury decorative plumbing innovations and offerings from the House of Rohl® portfolio of brands at houseofrohl.com. For press information, please visit houseofrohl.com/press-room. The House of Rohl®, a portfolio of five iconic, global luxury plumbing brands, today announced the launch of a new brand campaign to continue to fuel its fast-growing business. The new campaign partners with Hollywood creators to bring the idea of “Life Well Crafted” to screens nationwide, showcasing the artful integration of luxury design into an aspirational life. Directed by screenwriter, photographer and director Gia Coppola, the story shifts the usual industry focus from products to the interesting lives led and curated with the House of Rohl®.

New to the kitchen is the ROHL Apothecary™ Collection by House of Rohl, an extension of the popular award-winning bathroom collection. It draws its inspiration from the beautiful shapes of old apothecary bottles that are now sought-after collectibles. Designer Xander Noori looked to the past for inspiration and brought it into the present with unique chamfered details, beveled edges and balanced arcs, resulting in a silhouette of contoured elegance and nuanced simplicity. Apothecary adds an element of nostalgia and warmth to any space for an enduring design that's eminently collectable in and of itself. Evocative of the past, and designed for the present, with finely wrought details and advanced functionality, in collections that showcase modern and traditional design for kitchen, bar, and butler’s pantry.

By combining this exceptional material with high performance resins, ENGLISHCAST® is created; a unique composite with long-lasting properties that is used to make bathtubs and basins. Each item is individually hand-finished in Victoria + Albert's proprietary manufacturing facilities in Cape Town, South Africa. Driven by a deep understanding of consumer needs, Riobel continually seeks to hone their solutions through a combination of modeling and state-of-the-art testing.

With an eye for the exquisite and a passion for the uncommon we seek faucets and fixtures of authentic luxury, bringing the elusive within reach. At ROHL®, we search the world for the incomparable, seeking designs touched by hand or forged through new techniques, rooted in the past or looking toward the future. What results from our pursuit are faucets and fixtures with refined sensibility and unique provenance to elevate kitchens and baths to authentic luxury.

“For this production, I was inspired by noir and new-wave movie trailers, and the aesthetic of black-and-white visuals, and was thrilled to help bring the agency’s scripts and vision to life with the excellent talent and crew on set. I’m excited to see where the team takes our footage in the edit! The black and white, cinematic narrative gives glimpses into the life of a couple and their emotional and physical preparations for an exquisite dinner party and its aftermath. Not everything is as it may seem for the beautiful couple, as they navigate the evening. The Campo™ handle and escutcheon design emulate the valve/stem combination used in the building of industrial conduit systems.

Victoria + Albert creates freestanding bathtubs and basins of exceptional luxury, made in South Africa with natural Volcanic Limestone™. Founded in Shropshire, England, Victoria + Albert® has established a worldwide reputation for creating beautiful freestanding bathtubs and basins. A Victoria + Albert® piece is a true balance of art and science with design excellence at its heart. Based in Montreal, Canada Riobel was born out of a vision of innovation and contemporary style. Riobel takes an industry-leading and progressive approach to design, marrying brilliant function with modern simplicity and elegance.

Fireclay sinks add timeless style, bathtubs of understated beauty become centrepieces, showers and faucets in a plethora of styles perform brilliantly. At the House of Rohl, we pursue the discovery of time-honored craft that opens the door to stories unlike any other. And the closer you look, the more you’ll see, the details of your own story of a life well crafted. Fireclay sinks add timeless style, bathtubs of understated beauty become centerpieces, showers and faucets in a plethora of styles perform brilliantly.

Bringing these brands into the family enables House of Rohl to expand its position as a trailblazer in luxury plumbing in the kitchen and bath and helps deliver on the vision of becoming the leader in luxury décor throughout the home. ROHL introduces a new bathroom collection inspired by the haute couture runways of Milan and Paris – the ROHL Modelle™ Collection by House of Rohl. Haute couture is fashion elevated into art and requires fine attention to detail and material purity. Famed furniture and interior designer Xander Noori designed the Modelle Collection with the same exactitude, originality and artistry. Modelle brings heightened beauty to the bath that, just like couture, is always in style.

The Story Craft Tells

The Eclissi™ kitchen faucet design is as rarified as an eclipse. Circular sun and moon shapes align with different finish combinations to create singular styles. A modern aesthetic with references to industrial-era design details like crosshatch embossing nuances and bolt-like shapes. The House of Rohl is opening its first ever Studio in North America. Located in LuxeHome (suite #135) on the first floor of Chicago’s historic Merchandise Mart, the House of Rohl Studio is highlighted by its diverse global brands, Riobel, Perrin & Rowe, Shaws, ROHL and Victoria + Albert.

Kitchen

This milestone in our journey is complemented by the strategic inclusion of EMTEK® and Schaub, expanding our offerings to create a comprehensive home design portfolio. Immerse yourself in the epitome of sophistication and craftsmanship. The brand’s name pays homage to the cult Italian designer Carla Venosta, who created modernist furniture and interiors in the 1970s and ’80s. Also new this year from Victoria + Albert is the Seros™ Collection by House of Rohl, which highlights the ongoing trend of spa-like bathrooms. In the same way rivers carve curves and waves into canyons and rocks, Seros captures the rippling motion of water in sculpted form.

Here, Ferrell and Poehler—fellow former “Saturday Night Live” cast members who also co-starred in “Blades of Glory”—barely seem to know each other, much less enjoy any sort of chemistry. On an ill-advised trip to Las Vegas with their gambling-and-porn addicted pal, Frank (Mantzoukas), they hatch a scheme to create an underground casino in Frank’s house. He’s in the middle of an ugly divorce, and his angry, estranged wife (Watkins) has cleared out much of the furniture, so there’s plenty of room for a craps table and a roulette wheel and such.

Raymond jumps the opportunity as a means of status, to have the nicest house in the area, and make others jealous. On the day of the viewing, the guests are unimpressed by the house, but a strangely proportioned couple remains, expressing a strong interest in buying the house. Over the next few days, the odd couple remain firmly settled in the house, the bugs return in force, and the bank keeps demanding repayment of the developer's business loan. The developer decides to stop indulging the couple, only for many members of their family to show up wanting to enter the house. He tries to call the police, who instead caution him for his constant, overly familiar phone calls to his dentist, who the film had led the audience to believe was his romantic partner. The House is a 2017 American comedy film directed by Andrew J. Cohen, and co-written by Cohen and Brendan O'Brien.

As the least bleak of the three shorts, this one shows how the promise of a house has a seductive power, representing a desire to cling to the past even when the floor below you is slowly flooding. It’s also another striking feat of stop-motion animation, with lifelike sets and clothes that practically breathe as the furry characters move. The foundation for the anthology is established by the gothic cloth animation of Emma De Swaef & Marc James Roels, who previously orchestrated the colonization mini-anthology short “This Magnificent Cake! ” Their eye for towering sets, intricate stark detail, and characters with tiny eyes and mouths continues here, with a slow burn tale about a family that suffers from a Faustian homeowner bargain. The father Raymond (Matthew Goode) makes a deal with “an architect of great renown” that he runs into the woods named Mr. Van Schoonbeek (Barney Pilling), who offers them a new mansion and furnishings, for free. The only catch, that they are aware of at least, is that they must give up their current home.

Following his prosecution and sentencing to death, McCarthy is amongst those present at the execution.

Things get even stranger, and more visually striking, when the parents are gifted clothes that look a lot like pieces to an ornate couch. It’s an effectively spooky short, one that gets a great deal of intrigue out what is unfolding in the shadows, prefacing the house as a nonsensical trap. Exploring the house one night, Mabel and Isobel find themselves lost in the maze it has become, eventually stumbling upon Thomas. Drunk and ashamed, Thomas confesses that he is an actor following a script provided by Van Schoonbeek. Meanwhile, Raymond is finally able to light a fire by burning the family's old possessions, including his father's chair and Mabel's dollhouse.

What’s most interesting about The House is how each story offers a different riff on this theme. The first two chapters lean into being creepy, particularly their unsettling endings, but while the first is more of a slow-building dread, the second is much more tangible. Meanwhile, the final chapter, despite starting out quite bleak, ends on a surprisingly hopeful note. The third and final story of The House, directed by Paloma Baeza, ends, thankfully, on a more uplifting note. A landlady named Rosa (voiced by Susan Wokoma) is determined to pursue her life-long dream of fixing up a crumbling but beautiful Victorian home, despite the fact that a devastating flood has driven away almost all of her residents.

The overall plot of the individual movies center around the supernatural events that take place at haunted houses, and detail the actions of the protagonist families that live in them. The House film series is a group of four American horror films released between 1986 and 1994, with the fifth installment scheduled for release in 2024. The series also touches on genres such as psychological thriller, supernatural, slasher, comedy, and adventure. The House also features some of the best-looking stop-motion animation you’ll see outside of a Laika film. The final story, meanwhile, is more ethereal, with foggy backdrops that signal something approaching the end of the world.

Because they hardly feel like people—about halfway through, I realized I didn’t even know their characters’ names—the extraordinary scheme they’ve concocted for themselves makes no sense and has no momentum. It also has no laughs, or at least precious few, which is why a movie with this caliber of star power is being sneaked into theaters without being shown to critics ahead of time. At his wit's end, the developer tries to use the boric acid on the couple, but he inhales a mouthful and faints. The couple picks the developer up from the hospital and brings him home, where their family welcomes him back, many of them now sporting additional limbs. The final scene shows the family ravaging the inside of the house—climbing up the walls and chewing through everything. The developer, having regressed to animal-like intelligence, briefly emerges from the remains of the oven to eat garbage before retreating underground.

Emerging from the vision, she sees Jen and Cosmos sailing away, calling for her to join them; but the boat is too far away. Remembering a large lever Cosmos had built, she pushes it, transforming the house into a seaworthy vessel. Encouraged by Jen, Cosmos, and a returning Elias, Rosa takes control of the house ship, escaping as the floods destroy the surrounding foundations, and the four sail out into the ocean. After the family moves in, Mabel notices several peculiar things about the house and the workers constantly refitting it, but her parents are mesmerized by the house and its luxuries. Raymond becomes increasingly obsessed with the house's fireplace, which he constantly fails to light up, while Penny spends more and more time sewing drapes. Mabel becomes further put off when her parents don attire designed by Van Schoonbeek which resembles the furniture they adore (a chair and curtains).

Years later, they unexpectedly reunite at a destination wedding in Australia for Bea’s sister, who is marrying Ben’s friend. The film was directed and co-written by Will Gluck, the filmmaker behind rom-coms like Easy A and Friends with Benefits. It was released in December and had an impressive run at the box office, surpassing $88 million domestically and $219 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. The second story, directed by Swedish animator and filmmaker Niki Lindroth von Bahr, takes things from “gothic children’s fairy tale” creepy to straight-up horror movie creepy. He’s in over his head—the place has a nasty infestation of wriggly, crawly bugs that won’t go away with simple spraying.

The story is set in a world populated by anthropomorphic rats, and the house is now settled in a developed city street and about to go up for sale. The developer renovating the house recently laid off his entire construction crew to reduce costs and must do all the work himself. Discovering the house has been infested by fur beetles and larvae, he uses copious amounts of boric acid to get rid of them, to no avail.

Though he inherited the property as a baby when his parents died, he has purposefully avoided the property. The couple allow his best friend Charlie Coriell, and the latter's girlfriend to move in as additional roommates. They soon discover some memorabilia in the basement, which once belonged to his great-great-grandfather (and namesake). "Gramps", who was a treasure hunter was the keeper of an Aztec crystal skull that he discovered with his partner and friend-turned-enemy "Slim" Reeser. After examining some photographs and paperwork, they resolve to dig up the grave of his ancestor, believing that he had the ancient treasure buried with him. Ferrell and Poehler can only do so much with barely-there characters in half-baked situations.

When the sisters finally reunite with their parents, they find Raymond and Penny turned into furniture—Raymond into a chair and Penny into curtains. Using the curtains to climb out a window while their parents burn alive, Mabel and Isobel escape before watching the smoking house from a distance as the sun rises. During their visit to Bucknell University, husband and wife Scott and Kate Johansen warn their daughter of the dangers of being in college. Alex acknowledges her parents' warnings and expresses her interest in attending the same university her parents went to. Alex gets accepted to the university, which the Johansens expect to be funded by their community's scholarship program.

In a world that suffered an apocalyptic flood and is populated by anthropomorphic cats, the house is surrounded by water which keeps rising. Rosa, the landlord who cherishes the memories of her days growing up in the house, dreams of restoring it to its former glory. However, she struggles financially; and her only tenants, fisherman Elias and hippie Jen, do not pay rent despite her insistence; she consistently ignores their attempts to address the rising water. Back home, Frank convinces the Johansens to start an underground casino at his house to raise money for Alex's tuition and to help him get his wife back. In another community town-hall meeting, Bob becomes suspicious at the low attendance and suspends the meeting to launch an investigation. Back at the Johansens' casino, Frank discovers that one of the gamblers, Carl, is counting cards.

Fewer than 10 films make up the legit “Amityville Horror” canon, and even that number is up for debate. Like the word “Paranormal,” “Amityville” has become more of a low-effort synecdoche for generic possessions of things (“Amityville Vibrator”), holidays (“Amityville Christmas Vacation”) or locations (“Amityville in Space”). The films are mostly comedic, have micro budgets and have little continuity with the original. Director Will Gluck told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted the film set in Sydney because he had “really fallen in love with the city” and liked it so much he moved his family there. This section includes characters who will appear or have appeared in more than two films in the series.

I can only hope that, like Rosa and her beautiful home, we can find a way to sail into the flood. When Scott and Kate Johansen’s daughter gets into the college of her dreams it’s cause for celebration. That is, until Scott and Kate learn that the scholarship they were counting on didn’t come through, and they’re now on the hook for tuition they can’t begin to afford.

After a visit from his overly critical mother, the father of the family, Raymond (voiced by Matthew Goode), takes a drunken midnight walk and makes a deal with a mysterious architect who offers to gift the family a new, luxurious house for free. Ferrell and Poehler star as Scott and Kate Johansen, nerdy suburbanites who live in a spacious home in a charming, leafy village called Fox Meadow. Their teenage daughter, Alex (Ryan Simpkins), has just been accepted to her dream school of Bucknell University. But for some reason, Scott and Kate never set aside any money for her college education; despite their well-off status, it’s unclear what they do for a living, and in an unfunny running bit, Scott is terrible with numbers. So they rely on the annual scholarship the town awards—only this year, soulless city councilman Bob (Kroll) plans to use that money for a lavish community pool. The House is a 2022 British stop-motion animated anthology film written by Enda Walsh and telling different stories forming a trilogy spanning different worlds and characters but set inside the same house.

Jump to the last chapter, by Paloma Baeza, and the world has gotten even more chaotic but quieter. The house is now marooned on a nondescript body of rising water, surrounded by a pink mist. But the current cat landlord Rosa (Susan Wokoma) is obsessed with refurbishing the place, and has a whole plan charted out. Meanwhile her two current tenants, Elias (Will Sharpe) and Jen (Helena Bonham Carter), don’t pay rent with money but they do share a type of family bond with each other.

House (film series)

Unfortunately, during a community town hall meeting, city councilor Bob Schaeffer announces that they will not be doing the scholarship program, in favor of building a community pool, to which everyone agrees except the Johansens. The couple tries to find funding through asking for a loan, a salary raise for Scott, and getting Kate's job back, but everything is denied. They reluctantly agree to accompany their friend and neighbor, Frank Theodorakis, whose wife Raina is divorcing him over his gambling and porn addiction, to a previously-planned trip to Las Vegas. After numerous wins playing craps, they lose their winnings after Scott jinxes the table by telling Frank not to roll a seven. It’s an easy detail to forget, because it’s easy to get lost in the compelling narrative of the three short animated films that make up The House.

There are at least 45 sequels to Stuart Rosenberg’s 1979 horror drama about a family under siege by supernatural forces inside their home in suburban Amityville, Long Island. That’s more than the “Star Wars,” “Fast and Furious” and “X-Men” franchises combined. While on their way to collect flowers for the wedding, Ben and his friend Pete are seen walking alongside the Queen Victoria Building.

But despite his disastrous showing, an old, unsettling rat couple is “very interested” in the house. To say it doesn’t end well for the contractor is putting it mildly—the final, haunting shot is an image so viscerally disturbing, so relentlessly bleak, that I’ll be thinking about it for weeks to come. And yet, it is also an artistic triumph achieved by destroying such a meticulously-built set. The first tale, titled simply “Story 1,” is directed by Marc James Roels and Emma de Swaef, a Belgium stop-motion filmmaking duo. Roels and de Swaef’s gorgeous set takes viewers back to the 1800s, where a family of four (all vaguely off-putting fabric dolls) is living in a modest home.

The cliff-top park is open to the public and has fitness stations, a playground, and some shaded areas. The 20th-century architectural landmark serves as a gorgeous backdrop for big moments, including the end scene when Ben passionately kisses Bea, who is standing at the top of the steps. Whether you're a fan of stop-motion animation or just looking for something deeply, alluringly weird, The House will feel like home.

The only constant is the house, which is always recognizable despite superficial changes over the years. The family is quickly seduced by the extravagant amenities—the food that appears on massive dining room table, the electricity that provides full illumination. But young daughter Mabel (Mia Goth) has more trepidation, as she starts to witness the stranger aspects of its construction, like the zombified workers, who toil in the darkness, and suddenly take away the staircase at night.

Where Was Anyone But You Filmed?

“The House” is an animated anthology with an inspired narrative focus, as it tells the history of one building, across time and species. With its rising directors each employing a surreal style, it creates a rich balance of ethereal, existential storytelling with stop-motion animation that’s so detailed and alive you can practically feel it on your fingertips. Despite the various circumstances and timelines, in each story the house represents a kind of lifeline for the characters. It’s a chance for a family to inspire jealousy, for a mouse to pull himself out of the crushing weight of debt, and for a cat to slowly build the home of her dreams.

Each tale—which, while animated, are dark and creepy and morbid and decidedly not for young children—centers on a different house. The houses are beacons of corruption, objects of scams, and symbols of thwarted dreams. The protagonists move into them, out of them, fix them up, tear them down, and ride them off into the sunset. And with all three houses come lessons about materialism, about deception, and about letting go.

Bob is arrested, while Scott and Kate use the money they took back from him to pay for their daughter's college tuition. The House, one of Netflix’s first new releases of the year, is a straightforward concept. It’s a film split into three chapters, each helmed by a different director, all of which explore a different story related to the same sprawling home. What connects each short, aside from the physical house and stop-motion animation, is a creeping sense of dread. The House looks cute, with talking animals and dollhouse-like visuals, but in each story there’s something lurking just beneath the surface; something wrong, unsettling. It could be a recession or a scary creature — but when you put it together the result is an anthology with a trio of distinct, yet clearly connected stories.

After an unforeseen auto collision ends with his death, Laurel finds herself a widow that must care for their daughter who is now paralyzed and wheelchair-bound. Now the heir to the Cobb house, Burke begins to pressure her into selling the estate. Despite her initial resistance, inexplicable paranormal events begin to take place within their home. Scaring her into consideration of the sale, she seeks the help of a Native American spiritual guide named Ezra. After conversing with the spirits that reside in the house, the old man reveals to Kelly and Laurel that the strange happenings are the attempts of a warning from the ghosts of Roger and a number of Native Americans.

In addition to a number of award-winning shorts, like High Desert Hell and The Gemini Project, the up-and-coming genre filmmaker has previously been tapped to helm multiple music videos for the L.A.-based indie rock band Mt. Joy. Evil Dead is, of course, Raimi’s horror franchise going back to 1981’s same-name film starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, a combatant of various supernatural entities. That pic grew into a trilogy, also spurring the creation of Starz’s Ash vs. Evil Dead and a number of other projects. The most recent, standalone film Evil Dead Rise from writer-director Lee Cronin, grossed more than $147M worldwide last year when it hit theaters via Warner Bros, after launching at SXSW. “Almost every time you shoot a movie in Sydney, you have to pretend it’s somewhere else and frame out the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.

Director Will Gluck told THR that one of the best parts of filming was on location in Palm Beach, a suburb in the Northern Beaches. Pictures, received negative reviews from critics[3] and flopped at the box office, grossing $34 million worldwide against its $40 million budget. After its release, the movie went viral on TikTok as audience goers reacted to the film’s credit sequence, which features the cast dancing and singing to Natasha Bedingfield’s nostalgic 2004 hit “Unwritten,” a song highlighted throughout the film. There were also rumors of an off-screen romance between Powell and Sweeney that helped promote the film, as well as the actors’ flirty publicity tour and Sydney Sweeney’s SNL monologue.

The Johansens and Frank confront him, but he brags that he works for mob boss Tommy Papouli. Scott accidentally chops off Carl's middle finger, earning him the nickname "The Butcher", making the community afraid of him, which inadvertently increases their profits. The project is described only as an original story that Galluppi developed and brought to Raimi and team. Now, Anyone But You is back in the limelight after the film was released on Netflix on April 23, quickly becoming the No. 1 movie on the platform in the U.S. after just one day. Anyone But You finally made its Netflix streaming debut, which is exciting news for rom-com fans everywhere. Research Design: Case-Control Studies PMC

case control design

For example, in the above mentioned Melanoma and Tanning study, the researchers defined their population as any histologic variety of invasive cutaneous melanoma. However, they added another important criterion – these individuals should have a driver's license or State identity card. This probably is not directly related to the clinic condition, so why did they add this criterion? You would then collect data on your participants’ exposure to contaminated drinking water, focusing on variables such as the source of said water and the duration of exposure, for both groups. You could then compare the two to determine if there is a relationship between drinking water contamination and the risk of developing a gastrointestinal illness.

Research Design: Case-Control Studies

Case-control (case-control, case-controlled) studies are beginning to appear more frequently in the neurosurgical literature. They can be more robust, if well designed, than the typical case series or even cohort study to determine or refine treatment algorithms. The purpose of this review is to define and explore the differences between case-control studies and other so-called nonexperimental, quasiexperimental, or observational studies in determining preferred treatments for neurosurgical patients. In a retrospective cohort study, researchers examine a group before any of the subjects have developed the disease, then examine any factors that differed between the individuals who developed the condition and those who did not. The researcher would find a group of individuals with Kaposi's sarcoma (the cases) and compare them to a group of patients who are similar to the cases in most ways but do not have Kaposi's sarcoma (controls). The researcher could then ask about various exposures to see if any exposure is more common in those with Kaposi's sarcoma (the cases) than those without Kaposi's sarcoma (the controls).

Case-Control Study

The researcher would find a group of individuals with Kaposi's sarcoma (the cases) and compare them to a group of patients who are similar to the cases in most ways but do not have Kaposi's sarcoma (controls). The researcher might find that those with Kaposi's sarcoma are more likely to have HIV, and thus conclude that HIV may be a risk factor for the development of Kaposi's sarcoma. However, they can be a very efficient way of identifying an association between an exposure and an outcome.

case control design

What Is a Case-Control Study? Definition & Examples

Similarly, if all of the cases of Kaposi's sarcoma were found to come from a small community outside a battery factory with high levels of lead in the environment, then controls from across the country with minimal lead exposure would not provide an appropriate control group. The investigator must put a great deal of effort into creating a proper control group to bolster the strength of the case-control study as well as enhance their ability to find true and valid potential correlations between exposures and disease states. If, for example, our cases of Kaposi's sarcoma came from across the country but our controls were only chosen from a small community in northern latitudes where people rarely go outside or get sunburns, asking about sunburn may not be a valid exposure to investigate. Similarly, if all of the cases of Kaposi's sarcoma were found to come from a small community outside a battery factory with high levels of lead in the environment, then controls from across the country with minimal lead exposure would not provide an appropriate control group.

Care must be taken to be objective in the search for past risk factors, especially since the outcome is already known, or the study may suffer from researcher bias. Although it may not always be possible, it is important to try to mask the outcome from the person who is collecting risk factor information or interviewing patients. Sometimes it will be necessary to interview patients about potential factors (such as history of smoking, diet, use of traditional eye medicines, etc.) in their past. Furthermore, patients who have the outcome (cases) are likely to scrutinize the past, remembering details of negative exposures more clearly than controls. Anything the researcher can do to minimize this type of bias will strengthen the study. Cohort and case–control studies aim to quantitatively estimate the association between a drug exposure and outcome.

This view emphasises that the threats to the validity of cohort studies should also be considered in case-control studies. For example, in case-control applications with risk-set sampling, researchers often consider the covariate and exposure status only at, or just before, the time of the event (for cases) or the time of sampling (for controls). However, where a cohort study would require information on baseline levels or the complete treatment and covariate history of participants, one should suspect that this holds for the nested case-control study too.

This type of design is useful for rare outcomes and those with long latent periods. However, they may also be prone to certain biases – selection bias and recall bias. This paper gives a formal account of how and when causal effects can be identified in case-control studies and, as such, underpins the case-control application of Dickerman et al. [3]. Like Dickerman et al., we believe that case-control studies should generally be regarded as being nested within cohort studies.

We emphasize that identification and estimation are distinct steps in causal inference. Although our focus was on the former, identifying functionals often naturally translate into estimators. The task of finding the estimator with the most appealing statistical properties is not necessarily straightforward, however, and is beyond the scope of this paper. Case-control studies compare groups retrospectively, while longitudinal studies can compare groups either retrospectively or prospectively.

Another use for case-control studies is investigating risk factors for a rare disease, such as uveal melanoma. Patients who present to hospital, however, may not be representative of the population who get melanoma. If, for example, women present less commonly at hospital, bias might occur in the selection of cases. (For identification of a conditional risk ratio, see Theorem 2 of Supplementary Appendix B.) Case-base sampling, also known as case-cohort sampling, means that no individual who is at risk at baseline of sustaining the event of interest is precluded from selection as a control.

Case-control studies, due to their typically retrospective nature, can be used to establish a correlation between exposures and outcomes, but cannot establish causation. These studies simply attempt to find correlations between past events and the current state. Case-control studies, due to their typically retrospective nature, can be used to establish a correlation between exposures and outcomes, but cannot establish causation.

As seen in Figure 1, at the time of entry into the study (sampling of participants), some of the study participants have the outcome (cases) and others do not have the outcome (controls). During the study procedures, we will examine the exposure of interest in cases as well as controls. We will then study the association between the exposure and outcome in these study participants. Bias in a case-control study might also result if exposures cannot be measured or recalled equally in both cases and controls. Healthy controls, for example, may not have been seen by a physician for a particular illness or may not remember the details of their illness. Choosing from a population with a disease different from the one of interest but of similar impact or incidence may minimize recall and measurement bias, since affected individuals may be more likely to recall exposures or to have had their information recorded to a level comparable to cases.

The authors have done a nice job of explaining the fundamental concepts of an underutilized but very useful retrospective study design, the case control study. As they point out, because many neurosurgical conditions are relatively uncommon, and because we are impatient to answer important clinical questions, the sample sizes and duration of prospective cohort studies and randomized trials may be impractical for many neurosurgical questions. Case-control study, in epidemiology, observational (nonexperimental) study design used to ascertain information on differences in suspected exposures and outcomes between individuals with a disease of interest (cases) and comparable individuals who do not have the disease (controls). Analysis yields an odds ratio (OR) that reflects the relative probabilities of exposure in the two populations.

Sample size calculations required for statistical significance typically yield far fewer subjects than necessary for enrollment in RCTs,5 which is beneficial in studying uncommon conditions and outcomes. This is because in case-control studies, groups are divided by the outcome presence or absence looking backward for prevalence of exposure, treatment, or risk factors. In cohort studies, on the other hand, groups are divided by exposure, treatment or risk factors, looking forward to frequency of outcomes. Because frequency of outcomes is almost always smaller than prevalence of exposure, treatment, or risk factors, sample sizes in cohort studies are (usually) much larger than those of case-control studies.

At $495, the DaVinci Resolve Micro Color Panel is significantly more affordable than its larger counterparts. This opens the door for a wider range of editors and colorists to experience the power of dedicated control panels and take their creative output to the next level. For existing DaVinci Resolve users, the Micro Color Panel offers a familiar feel. The trackballs boast a similar professional design, and the shift keys mimic the layout of higher-end panels.

Since taking ownership, Buss has made some significant renovations to the club. He has also brought in a new management team, led by Penny Toler, a former Los Angeles Sparks player. Toler is committed to making the Ice House a welcoming and inclusive space for all comedy fans.

Welcome To The Ice House Pasadena

Ice was often imported into the UK from Scandinavia until the 1920s, although from around 1900 the import of ice declined sharply owing to the development of factories in the UK where ice was made artificially. Usually, only large mansions had purpose-built buildings to store ice. Many examples of ice houses exist in the UK, some of which have fallen into disrepair. Though it’s always served its purpose as a training ground, the Ice House is also going to be a place where stars can mingle while they watch famous funny people perform. That’s where the club’s secret crown jewel, the newly built VIP lounge, comes into play.

Entertainment

The club sat in limbo until recently — during which time Buss’ mother, JoAnn Mueller, also passed away, before the club reopened. The Ice House Pasadena presents a diverse range of comedy performances. From established headliners to up-and-coming comedians, the lineup features a variety of styles and genres, including observational comedy, improv, one-liners, and more. The club also hosts open mic nights and themed showcases, ensuring a dynamic and entertaining experience for all comedy enthusiasts. The Ice House Pasadena is a historic comedy club located in Pasadena, known for its exceptional performances and rich comedic history. Since 1960, it has been a premier destination for comedy lovers, hosting renowned comedians and emerging talents alike.

Though the Ice House is known as a place for comedy, it was also a stage where folk acts, magicians and other performers wielded wands and banjos, honing their craft in the ‘60s and ‘70s before stand-up emerged as the entertainment of choice. With the club’s revival, Buss says live music and other events will play a role in the monthly bookings including jazz, reggae and country nights. Sparks in 2006 — a team he’d helped build into a winning franchise in the WNBA — Jerry’s health had already started declining. Departing from the parking lot along Icehouse Canyon Road, the trail takes course along the northern bank of a creek that flows down the canyon. Crystal clear water tumbles past oaks and sycamores, and this is a fine venue for a directionless romp through nature for those disinterested in following the trail.

For all the years she was involved in the WNBA, Toler says she and Buss always had a great working relationship that allowed her to grow in her career. His father’s notoriously outside-the-box methods of running a team made him a genius and impossible to predict. In June 2001, the Ice House Artist Studios at rd Street in Lawrenceville opened its doors as a new facility for 32 artists, arts-related businesses and arts organizations. The project was enthusiastically supported by the Lawrenceville community for its re-use of a long-abandoned, historic building and its attraction of artists and new businesses to the neighborhood.

Throughout the brick building in downtown Pasadena, vintage and modern flourishes demand attention like stylistic punchlines. The glowing stalactite chandeliers, electric neon art of cacti, waves and sun punctuate the walls of the California Room, the venue’s second stage. Guests pass through the red-brick walls of the revamped bar and patio area into the revived main room. Despite the club’s new mainstage set up, dubbed the Legendary Room, it still retains an intimate vibe where stand-up idols and up-and-comers have thrived on the raw energy and laughter of a working class clientele.

From the saddle, hikers and backpackers may continue on in several directions to explore nearby peaks and venture deeper into the Cucamonga Wilderness. The single-track to Icehouse Saddle climbs 2,600 feet over 3.6 miles and is an exceptional hike. This is a backcountry hike and you should prepare accordingly.

Incense Cedars and firs become the dominant arbors, and 0.8 miles past the junction, the trail crosses a sign marking the boundary of the Cucamonga Wilderness. This is the halfway point by mileage, but in some ways, the hike is just beginning. Ft. ice house building was originally constructed in 1907 by the Consolidated Ice Company and operated as an ice making facility until the early 50s. The property was used only sporadically over the second half of the century and was a tremendous eyesore in the community with its boarded-up windows and generally run down condition. If you want to avoid the more populated trails, you can simply turn around here and retrace your steps back to the Icehouse Canyon Trailhead. Since she became the club's general manager, Toler's been regaled by every comic she meets about stories of the club from back in the day. The Lakers team co-owner Johnny Buss is now the owner of the Ice House. "I just wanted it to survive in the spot where it originated," he said. "It's a beautiful venue now," said Kevin Dorse who was at a show Friday night.

Since being hired as general manager of the Ice House, Toler sees the world of comedy clubs and sports franchises as synonymous when it comes to bringing in sponsorships, succeeding at marketing and acquiring talent. As an original draft pick for the Sparks when the team started in 1997, Toler was the first player to score a basket in WNBA history. After Buss hired her as general manager of the team years later, she assembled the roster that led the Sparks to a championship victory in 2001.
